Choose Joy

Choose Joy

May 2013

We all can relate to circumstances that take the wind out of our sails. Whether it’s a seemingly inconvenient pregnancy to an unexpected tragedy, all of us at some time or other have lost our joy. How do you get it back? Does it depend on your circumstances or can you really choose to have joy IN SPITE of your circumstances? In this four part series called “CHOOSE JOY”, I will take us through the book of Philippians and introduce a man who chose joy despite being in prison and ultimately facing death. Paul’s insight and experience can help us choose joy no matter what our situation may be.

The Bible is not filled with feel-good messages for a world we don’t live in. All throughout Scripture we find God speaking directly into uncertain times. Joseph found himself in a pit while his brothers debated whether to sell him or kill him. King David was awakened one morning to the rumor that his own son was conspiring against him, but he had no proof. The apostle Paul thought God had called him, but found himself bound and dragged to prison—and with the future a blur. In this final message, I point out what Paul tells us to do when God’s promises don’t seem to be coming true. We will discover that joy really is a choice.

The world is full of joy robbers, people who think there is a certain way to do things and a certain boundary you have to stay within. They can not only steal your joy, but they can steal your dreams if you let them. So how do you maintain the joy? How do you keep from letting someone poop on your party or even worse, become a party pooper yourself? In this message we will discover three things we must do to have a relationship with God, which is the source of real joy.

One of the major causes of unhappiness in our world is strained relationships. Relationships that are in conflict cause disunity, and disunity steals our joy. When there is unity there is tremendous power and potential. The problem is people don't always get along. In this message I show us how reduce the conflict in our relationships. We will learn that in order to get along with other people and have joy and harmony, we must grow more and more like Jesus Christ.

How many of us thought that by the time we reached this age in life, this position, things would be different? There may be some things that are nagging you in the back of your mind that have robbed you of your joy. I will share a personal story from my own life of how my wife Dianna and I chose joy during an unexpected and inconvenient situation. In the midst of our circumstances we learned to ask “what” instead of “why”.
